You can view the original <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynbc5.com\/article\/touring-vermont-snowboarders-promote-diversity-in-winter-sports\/35821579\">HERE<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3awNPicvWno\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>MENDON, Vt. \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Three prominent young snowboarders are blazing new trails for groups that have been historically underrepresented in winter sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe idea for me would be to make the mountains more colorful over the next few years,\u201d said Zeb Powell, the Vermont-based snowboarder who in 2019 became the first Black snowboarder to ever win gold at the X Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A 2019-2020 study from the trade group Snowsports Industries America found that 67.5% of participants in winter sports were white. Asians made up 7.7%, 9.2% of participants were Black and 14% were Hispanic, the study found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Powell said he wants to see more people of color enter the sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI won X Games and other Black people started reaching out to me and saying, \u2018I didn\u2019t even know other Black people snowboarded,\u2019\u201d Powell recalled. \u201cAnyone can ride. No matter who you are, what color you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Powell told NECN and NBC10 Boston he is planning to craft opportunities for more kids and teens from big cities to enjoy mountain sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Powell and his buddy Miles Fallon, who\u2019s of Asian heritage, are supporting nonprofits that address the affordability gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPrograms like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoodstowoodsfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoods to Woods<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Chill Foundation<\/a>, they\u2019re allowing kids to get out there and making it more accessible for them, which is really rad,\u201d Fallon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They pair has been criss-crossing Vermont with Red Bull\u2019s &#8220;Slide-In Tour,&#8221; a laid-back road trip for elite riders. It included a stop Wednesday at Killington Resort\u2019s Woodward Mountain Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The event has also highlighted the Chill Foundation\u2019s youth development programs in the northeast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf we can build out our community to make it more diverse and inclusive, that\u2019s the goal,\u201d said Maggie Leon, another snowboarder who is part of the tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Burton employee has been encouraging girls and women to pick up boards, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen I was little, I was basically the only girl on-hill,\u201d Leon remembered. \u201cEventually, hopefully, we\u2019ll have a 50-50 split on the mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Social media has been key to helping the riders grow their community, the snowboarders noted. They pledged to continue using video, photos and posts to inspire greater participation in their favorite sport by members of underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m snowboarding, it\u2019s a euphoric feeling that you can\u2019t really capture anywhere else,\u201d Fallon said. \u201cAnd it would be rude of me to not try to share it with other people!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This story is by Jack Thurston, and was published on mynbc5.com on March 12, 2021.
