You can find a list of additional resources at\u202f<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opencounseling.com\/hotlines-ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>OpenCounseling.com\/hotlines<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Facts:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">1 in 5\u00a0teenagers\u00a0face a\u00a0mental health challenge or disorder that significantly impacts their lives. Some\u00a0challenges are\u00a0mild and last for a short period. Others can last a lifetime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Half of all serious adult\u00a0psychiatric\u00a0disorders\u00a0start by age 14 and treatment often doesn\u2019t begin\u00a0until\u00a0at least 6 years\u00a0after\u00a0onset.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Suicide is the second leading cause of death\u00a0among young adults in both the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\">Early research\u00a0indicates that COVID-19 is\u00a0affecting the mental health of\u00a0children\u00a0and\u00a0adolescents\u00a0and that depression and anxiety are prevalent.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">But there is hope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Research shows\u00a0that\u00a0early intervention\u00a0works\u00a0and can help to\u00a0increase quality of life\u00a0for youth\u00a0who may be experiencing a mental health challenge.\u00a0Adolescence\u00a0is already a time of significant\u00a0physical,\u00a0mental, social and emotional change and so it\u2019s\u00a0critical\u00a0that as\u00a0adults, we\u00a0learn how to understand the difference between typical adolescent development and what may require\u00a0our\u00a0intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)\u00a0is an evidence-based,\u00a0public education program that\u00a0teaches adults how to help youth who are experiencing a mental health\u00a0or addictions challenge,\u00a0or\u00a0who\u00a0is in crisis.\u00a0Last\u00a0Thursday, more than half of Chill staff\u00a0became\u00a0certified Youth Mental Health First Aiders,\u00a0attending\u00a0a\u00a0virtual\u00a0training with\u00a0instructors\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vermontafterschool.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vermont\u00a0Afterschool<\/a>.\u00a0Our team\u00a0did 2\u00a0hours\u00a0of self-led pre-work, then\u00a0learned\u00a0together\u00a0over the course of 5\u00a0hours\u00a0how to approach\u00a0and help\u00a0a youth who may be experiencing a\u00a0challenge\u00a0or\u00a0is in\u00a0crisis. We\u00a0were taught\u00a0how to apply the\u00a05-step\u00a0ALGEE action plan\u00a0(Assess for risk of suicide or harm,\u00a0Listen\u00a0nonjudgmentally,\u00a0Give\u00a0reassurance and information,\u00a0Encourage\u00a0appropriate professional help,\u00a0Encourage\u00a0self-help and other support strategies)\u00a0and\u00a0role-played\u00a0different scenarios with youth.\u00a0\u00a0We learned the exact language to use when asking a youth about suicide and practiced it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">CPR\/First-Aid\u00a0doesn\u2019t teach folks how to perform\u00a0surgeries\u00a0and\u00a0YMHFA does not now qualify us to\u00a0diagnose\u00a0and treat\u00a0mental illness and substance use disorders.\u00a0But just like CPR\/First Aid,\u00a0YMHFA taught\u00a0us how to\u00a0connect\u00a0youth\u00a0to help\u00a0they may need.\u00a0Also\u00a0like\u00a0CPR, we will need to\u00a0continue to\u00a0practice\u00a0the skills learned, reciting over and over the ALGEE action steps.\u00a0(One\u00a0way we learned to remember this\u00a0mnemonic:\u00a0forming\u00a0our arms into each ALGEE letter.\u00a0Think YMCA.\u00a0Sounds\u00a0silly but\u00a0can\u00a0work.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Join us\u00a0and the millions of other Mental Health First Aiders\u00a0in\u00a0seeking to make a\u00a0difference in the lives of youth with a mental health challenge.\u00a0We owe it them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Mental health training\u00a0covers sensitive and often difficult topics which can be triggering\u00a0for\u00a0some people.\u00a0Click\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/population-focused-modules\/youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0to find a course in Youth Mental Health First Aid.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chill.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capture20.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chill.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capture20-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chill.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capture20-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chill.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Capture20.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Content Warning:\u00a0The following\u00a0post discusses mental health\u00a0crisis, including suicide, which may be triggering\u00a0for some people.\u00a0If you\u00a0are\u00a0in the United States and are having thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at\u202f1-800-273-8255\u202f(TALK).
