Chill Foundation and Woodward Partner to Inspire Young People Through Skateboarding and Build a More Equitable Boardsports Community.

(Park City, Utah) – June 28, 2023Chill Foundation and Woodward , the global leader in action sports experiences, are proud to announce a new partnership this summer, awarding 20 Chill participants scholarships to attend weeklong summer skateboarding camp experiences at Woodward West and Woodward Pennsylvania. The new partnership illustrates Woodward and Chill Foundation’s shared commitment to making boardsports more accessible by lowering the barrier for entry for more young people.

“We recently completed a major renovation and transformation of our facilities at Woodward Pennsylvania and Woodward West focused on creating more and better environments that lean into progression and lower the barrier of entry for new and beginner skateboarders,” said Phoebe Mills, VP of Camp Experiences & Programming at Woodward Global. “There is no better way to celebrate the opening of these new facilities than partnering with Chill to bring underserved youth to camp for an unforgettable experience.”

The 20 Chill scholarships recipients will experience a variety of skate program offerings, including a Learn to Skate and Trick clinic at Woodward Pennsylvania with visiting VIP athlete and Chill Ambassador Chris “Cookie” Colbourn, in the brand-new Progression Centre. This indoor multisport hub has 24,000 square feet of space, built with progression and exploration in mind, by including more entry-level features to create a less intimidating and more inviting environment for learning and progression.  Chris “Cookie” Colburn is a part of the Worble Skate team, and has been a Chill Ambassador for years, mentoring Chill participants in Burlington, Vermont, and Los Angeles. In addition, each of the Chill scholarship kids will receive a brand-new complete skateboard and helmet, courtesy of Chill.

The scholarships will be funded in part by Chill’s Jake Burton Carpenter Fund, which was created in honor of the late co-founder, and funds increased programming for Chill alumni to participate in more immersive opportunities in the sport through advanced coaching, instruction, and community engagement. Woodward aligns with this goal to keep inspiring progression on and off the board by offering camps that support young people in building new skills, building self-confidence and soaring higher than they ever thought possible.

“We’re excited to expand our Woodward partnership with the addition of summer camp experiences for Chill youth across the US! Thanks to scholarships from Woodward and support from the Jake Burton Carpenter Fund, youth from Los Angeles and New York City are heading to Woodward’s best in class, weeklong camps to get advanced coaching on their new skateboards,” said Lindsay O’Brien, Chill’s VP of Operations. “Jake believed in fun above all else and we’re stoked to partner with Woodward in continuing his legacy.”

Ed Tech newcomer, Kikori (App), is teaming up with the Chill Foundation to combat the teen mental health crisis by building youth empowerment.

Kikori provides a curated list of activities which are designed to build resiliency through inspiring a strong sense of community, connection, and self esteem, all while learning to ride boards. The Chill Foundation plans to leverage Kikori’s easily accessed activities with their Board Sports Youth Development Program and Community Coordinators.

The partnership between Kikori and the Chill Foundation is a natural fit as each day of the Chill program begins and ends with icebreakers, energizers, and reflection designed to build respect, courage, patience, persistence, responsibility and pride. Kikori activities are authored by luminaries in the Experiential Learning space, and also by fellow Kikori users.

Kikori provides the Chill Foundation leaders with a powerful platform to provide easy access to high quality activities for their daily programming while creating “productive downtime” when students are riding the bus, waiting for equipment, and eating lunch.

“I was thrilled when I learned that the Chill Foundation was using Kikori team building activities with their youth.  I have a special place in my heart for snowboarding as I used to take the bus to our local mountain in northern Michigan growing up, and I know the feelings of confidence when you are finally able to carve down the mountain.  Chill’s dedication to increasing joy and connection match Kikori’s mission to democratize access to experiential education, and together we believe we can positively impact more youth,” Kendra Bostick, Kikori Co-founder and CEO.

“Chill is proud to partner with companies like Kikori who are prioritizing equitable access for young people to experience so many of the positive mental health benefits available in outdoor experiential education.  Together we are building a future for youth where a sense of belonging and community is intrinsic to having fun outside on a board.” Ben Clark, CEO, Chill Foundation.

Kikori’s partnership with Chill has been kicked off in 18 locations across the United States, Canada, Italy and Switzerland. It began with snowboarding this past winter and has moved into skateboarding, surfing and stand up paddleboarding this spring and summer!

Together, Kikori and Chill are working to combat the teen mental health crisis through fostering resiliency, a sense of belonging, and self esteem.

Burlington, Vermont (September 22, 2021)— The Chill Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Ben Clark will become the new Global CEO of Chill. Created in 1995 by Burton Snowboards’ late founder Jake Burton Carpenter and his wife, current Burton owner Donna Carpenter, Chill inspires young people to overcome challenges through boardsports.

“Very rarely in my career have I been so certain that we have found the right senior leader at the right time,” said Donna Carpenter, Founder of Chill. “Ben is experienced, strategic and mission-driven. He has extensive US and international experience leading multi-site youth development programs and a proven track record of transforming organizations through his commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition, Ben has a personal passion for the transformational power of snowboarding and boardsports. As Chill prepares to grow both geographically and programmatically, I am confident Ben is the right leader to take the foundation to the next level. We can’t wait to welcome Ben to Chill in November.”

Ben is an equity-driven leader with 15 years of experience in international and US-based social sector organizations with a demonstrated ability to create significantly higher levels of performance, impact and sustainability. Ben was most recently the Executive Director at Enroot, a nonprofit based in Cambridge, Massachusetts with a mission of empowering immigrant youth to achieve academic, career and personal success through inspiring out-of-school experiences. Under Ben’s leadership over the past eight years, Enroot has exponentially expanded its programming, number of students served, fundraising results and volunteer numbers. Prior to Enroot, Ben served as a Director at Teach For All, where he advised and coached CEOs and senior managers of more than 15 Teach for All network non-profit organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia on strategic planning, scaling and multi-site expansion, organizational structure, governance and talent management. In addition to his extensive work experience in the nonprofit sector, Ben earned a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School.

When Ben begins his role at the helm of Chill, he will be the chief executive for all Chill staff, sites and programs globally, currently in 10 countries, 24 cities, and undergoing a global expansion. For the 2021-2022 season, there are over 30 winter programs slated to begin in January, and Ben will ensure the Chill team is empowered to give the approximately 3,000 annual participants the life-changing experience of learning resiliency through boardsports. Once Ben is onboard, a major focus for the Chill Foundation will be expanding into more countries in Europe. Ben will also play a key role in Chill’s expansion of its new ‘Chill Evolution’ initiatives, which include programs that provide Chill participants with the opportunity to build leadership skills, advance their boardsports experience and passion, and explore unique career opportunities.

“I’m deeply honored to become Chill’s CEO and thrilled about all we will accomplish together in the coming years,” said Ben Clark. “I believe there’s nothing we can’t achieve with Chill’s fantastic team and board of directors, as well as our amazing community of participants, alumni, volunteers, funders and champions around the world. Chill’s work supporting 30,000 young people over the last 26 years is proof of the magic that happens at the intersection of youth development, equity and boardsports. In the coming years, we’ll bring this magic to thousands of new young people and communities in the US and globally. We will also work hard to continue centering diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity in everything we do. Thank you to Donna and Jake for bringing this incredible community into the world, and to the Chill family for welcoming me!”

THE CHILL FOUNDATION AND VERMONT ADAPTIVE SKI AND SPORTS OFFER A UNIQUE AND SPECIALIZED SKATE PROGRAM

BURLINGTON, Vt. (Aug. 17, 2020) — The Chill Foundation and Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, two nonprofits with roots in Vermont, are excited to announce a new adaptive skateboarding program for people with disabilities. The unique program consists of three sessions where participants with varying abilities receive specialized instruction in skateboarding from coaches with assistance from participants’ companions as needed. This joint program is open to all ages but focuses on participants ages 10-18 with developmental or cognitive disabilities. With COVID-19 in mind, additional protocols are in place to protect the safety of all participants, caregivers and staff from both organizations. The program is free to participants and gear and equipment is provided. Masks and sanitation stations plus other health and safety measures are provided and in place as well.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Vermont Adaptive to bridge the boardsport and outdoor opportunity gap for young people with diverse abilities,” said Rosetta Weber, Director of Programs for Chill. “By prioritizing inclusive, diverse and equitable spaces to promote meaningful experiences for youth from marginalized communities and intersecting identities, we look forward to growing our partnership with Vermont Adaptive and with other organizations doing similar work in our communities throughout North America.”

Chill and Vermont Adaptive have a long-standing relationship, from sharing a seasonal home at Bolton Valley Ski area to providing paddle sports in Burlington. The two organizations cross paths regularly and serve similar communities.

“With all the skate resources around and the relatively easy access to equipment, it was a natural fit for our two organizations to collaborate to expand our expertise,” said Norm Staunton, Director of Operations for Vermont Adaptive. “It’s been a passion project for both organizations for more than a year. Skateboarding is another sport, like snow sports, water sports and biking, where once you are out recreating, the adaptations become less important and real social and sport inclusion can occur.”

Space in this new program is limited to six athletes (with companions, as needed) and will take place with Vermont Adaptive and Chill staff at a local outdoor skate park in Essex (exact location confirmed with participants once registered). The three sessions will be Wednesdays, Aug. 12, 19 and 26, from 4:30-7:00 p.m.

Registration is required at www.vermontadaptive.org/return-to-play.

This program may be the first collaboration between Chill and Vermont Adaptive, but it won’t be the last. As both organizations learn and adapt to the new challenges at hand, the opportunity for future programs will grow stronger.

All other Vermont Adaptive, Chill, and state COVID-19 Response protocols apply to this program. See Vermont Adaptive’s Return to Play plan at https://www.vermontadaptive.org/return-to-play/ and Chill’s COVID-19 Response at https://static1.squarespace.com/static/579bcdf6e3df287f0062b4cb/t/5ed94713ce71c45b7b51f23c/1591297812410/Chill+Program+COVID-19+Response.pdf for more information.

With Socially Responsible Practices in Place, Summer Youth-Development Programs Are Moving Forward

After careful consideration for safety and following the advice of the CDC, The Chill Foundation (Chill) is gearing up for the return of its boardsport programs this summer! Beginning this month, local youth will participate in stand-up paddleboarding programs with Toronto Island SUP, utilizing unique protocols and format changes to protect the safety of all participants. All associated costs are covered, and gear is provided for the participants, including masks and sanitation stations.

“Youth in our community need programs like Chill now more than ever before,” said Bailey Monty, Chill Regional Program Coordinator. “Our challenge was to figure out if we could safely return to our programs and provide a meaningful and impactful experience for our participants without adding to the long list of stressors already in their daily lives. It quickly became clear that we could. Our whole program is about overcoming challenges in the face of adversity, and the youth we serve rely on our programs so we couldn’t wait for the opportunity to get back out there and work with them again.”

The return to programs will continue to be gradual, careful, and safe, and Chill will continue to adapt along with the world. It’s clear that the youth want and need Chill, and boardsports, now as much as ever, are the perfect vehicle for taking on challenges.

The Chill Foundation Overcomes Covid-19 Challenges to Help Area Youth
With Socially Responsible Practices in Place, Summer Youth-Development Programs Are Moving Forward

After careful consideration for safety and following the advice of the CDC, The Chill Foundation (Chill) is gearing up for the return of its boardsport programs this summer! Beginning this month, local youth will participate in stand-up paddleboarding programs with Cascadia SUP & Surf, utilizing unique protocols and format changes to protect the safety of all participants.

Currently in its 25th year, Chill is impacting local communities with programs in 16 cities throughout North America.

Chill is a positive youth development program where boardsports become a vehicle for empowerment. Revolving around a core value-driven curriculum, Chill programs consist of experiential learning activities, reflection, and discussion, paired with boardsport lessons. Chill’s six core values provide youth with a foundation and framework for learning and growth, supported and enhanced through on-board progression and adult mentorship.
