Chill is a global non-profit foundation with the mission of positive youth development, conceived by Donna and the late Jake Burton, in 1995. Since the first event, on Burlington’s Bolton Valley resort, Chill’s mission has been to share the power of snowboarding with kids who might otherwise not have access to boardsports. And since 1995 it has giving thousands of young people a pathway to a new future with sports, the natural environment and community at its core. Now operating as a foundation across a number of European countries. We head to Winterberg, Germany to catch up with Burton Europe Team rider Leon Vockensperger and spend a day with the Chill crew! Special thanks to Patrick Dierks and our supporting partners: Stylefish Snowboard Schule Winterberg & Skigebiet Postwiese NeuAstenberg

This video gives you an inside look at one of the action-packed days from our 11-day Discover, Core, and Explore Skateboarding program in Zurich, fall 2024. On day four of the program, our youth took on the challenge of skateboarding for the fourth time, pushing themselves to show real courage. In this video, you’ll see how we bring the value of courage to life through both reflection and hands-on practice, showing how much can be achieved when we step out of our comfort zones. From overcoming fears to landing that first trick, these young people proved that growth happens when we dare to take the leap. A huge shoutout to Igor Zilincan, who volunteered his time and talent to create this video – from the concept to filming, editing, and sound. Thank you so much!

Dear Chill Community,

I write to you to relay a message of resilience, of unwavering commitment to our mission, and of gratitude for your ongoing support.

Regardless of one’s specific worldview, it is clear we are living through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and instability. Resources, institutions, and social norms that we took for granted as immovable fixtures of how we take care of one another are being broken and dismantled at lightning speed. As a result, many young people are experiencing exacerbated hardships right now, and will continue to for the foreseeable future.

Navigating adolescence has always been complex, but this is a uniquely challenging time to be a young person. The youth we work with at Chill, aged 11–19, are at a pivotal point in their development – deciding who they will become, and what they will contribute to the world as adults. All young people deserve to know that they are respected, loved, and supported by adults in society. Sadly, many of the signals our youth are receiving right now are not positive or confidence-building. In many ways this has always been true, but the volume right now is turned up to maximum.

Times like these require all of us to return to our own north star, as individuals and as organizations – to reaffirm who we are, what we believe in, and what future we are committed to building for the next generation. It is no accident that the concepts of Belonging and Equity are embedded in Chill’s core statements of Vision and Mission.

Vision: Chill envisions a world where any young person can belong and thrive in the boardsports community and beyond.

Mission: Chill inspires young people through boardsports and builds a more equitable outdoor community.

We are proud of our work to create belonging in boardsports and advance equity in the outdoors. Although the words used to express them may change from time to time, these concepts are at the very heart of the founding documents of the United States, and many countries, and will always be worth championing.

I am happy to report that despite the weight of this moment, the young people Chill serves are still finding joy on the mountain and getting back up from each fall, on and off the board. Our staff and volunteers are all proud to play a small role in their journey right now.

Thank you for standing by the beautiful, vibrant youth that Chill exists to support, and for continuing to invest in their success. In the not-to-distant future, we will look to this generation to offer steady, compassionate leadership in an increasingly complex world.

With love and appreciation,

Ben Clark
Chill CEO

Chill is deeply saddened to mourn the loss of our dear friend, colleague, and leader, Rosetta “Zetty” Weber, Chill’s VP of Global Programs. Zetty was tragically killed in a car accident in Vermont last week. Her passing leaves an ache in the hearts of so many of us in the Chill community.

Zetty was a 1 in a million – universally loved and appreciated by every person lucky enough to enter her orbit. She uplifted and inspired all of us with her massive heart, her soulful wisdom, and her appreciation for the humanity of every single individual she met. Most of all, she saw the potential in all young people and stopped at nothing to support their success through her 10 years of work at Chill, her previous service in the outdoor youth development space, and in her personal life. She was the bedrock of Chill’s programming, and she made ALL of our lives better, in ways both small and profound.

Zetty is survived by her husband, their young daughter, close family, and many, many friends who loved her. A GoFundMe has been set up to support her family during this challenging time. Please donate if you are able.

Chill Evolution was created to honor our co-founder Jake Burton Carpenter’s dream of helping young people continue to access boardsports and build a career in the outdoor industry. For many Chill alumni, that means having the chance to learn about professional opportunities that exist within the outdoor space, guidance in pursuing them, and ongoing participation after their Chill programs end.

Estefany and Alex returned as mentors to Chill’s Bronx program and are currently working at the Burton NYC store, thanks to support from Chill’s Evolution programs, while they pursue their education. Make a gift to the JBC Evolution campaign today to help Chill continue to support our alumni, on and off the board!

We have a goal of raising $70,000 by April 29th, in honor of what would have been Jake’s 70th birthday. A generous supporter is matching donations up to $35,000, so every gift has double the impact!
